How I Found My Style Sundays- Maison Decor

How I Found my Style Sundays-From My Front Porch To Yours
I am honored to have Amy from Maison Decor stopping by to visit with us today. I have been following along with her blog for years and she has always been an inspiration of mine. If you do not already know her and love her I am sure after you get to meet her you will be just as smitten.

How did I find my style?  What is my decorating style?
What things do I love best in my home?
What tips can I give those interested in their own pursuit of home decorating?
I was invited to answer these questions for Pamela today
as a guest blogger at From My Front Porch to Yours:
How I Found My Style Sundays.
The funny thing is that I find my style is always in a progression of change.
Its not a static thing for me, and maybe you can relate to that....
or maybe you do things once and the room stays like that because its "done"?
My style is in flux~ever changing.
Overall, through the years I have decorated with a feminine style.
Let me share you a few versions of the same room over the past several years.
From My Front Porch To Yours-How I Found My Style Sundays- Maison Decor
This was my living room two years ago.  Shabby Chic is the best way
to describe the style of decor I favored.  Lots of white with decorative
details, soft florals with vintage flavor. Recently I have been pairing
down the feminine florals and mixing in some rustic elements.
I think my style started to move in this direction after
working with my son Justin, together in our retail shop, Maison Decor.
His style influenced mine and I have been enjoying the changes I have made.
As far back as I can remember, I have always preferred feminine romantic style,
and as a young teen had a pink and purple room with a
white french provincial canopy bed dressed in
lilac colored ruffled bedding with sheer curtains at the windows.
I think most have a style preference that they are naturally drawn to,
just as I have had since I was old enough to have
an opinion about my own space, my childhood bedroom.
From My Front Porch To Yours-How I Found My Style Sundays- Maison Decor
I traded out the vintage floral carpet for a natural sisal, albeit with a
duck egg blue border.  I have less of the pinks and more of the sea glass blues
and greens that you find in nature mixed in with my mainly neutral palette
of pale grey walls and white upholstery.
Less Shabby Chic, more French Cottage would be the style.
Painted furniture has always had a place in my heart.  I continue
to prefer painted pieces over natural woods, but find a mix is best.
From My Front Porch To Yours-How I Found My Style Sundays- Maison Decor
Just a month or so ago I painted my mantle back to white after adding
some decorative appliques we sell at our shop.  Adding a classic yet
feminine touch to the living room while I redecorated some bits yet again.
I had planned to paint the backs of the bookcases in a beige color,
instead of the current darker grey....but then while writing this post I
stumbled upon an old living room shot of my bookcases.
From My Front Porch To Yours-How I Found My Style Sundays- Maison Decor
This was my Shabby Chic styled bookcases and sofa three years ago.
I still think its pretty and am tempted to put the floral liners back in place
for the spring and summer.  Perhaps paired up with the sisal carpet and without
the extra frilly details it might look nice.  I am definitely less fussy these days.
The decorating approach is one thing that I know will change.
It might stay a certain way for a few months or a year...
but its going to change, as I think all home decor should.
Keeping it current and fresh with little changes.
From My Front Porch To Yours-How I Found My Style Sundays- Maison Decor
Maybe the blue floral bookcase backers would be balanced out by the
sisal carpet and the baskets and the rustic painted coffee table?
I may just have to try it again and see how it feels.
That is one piece of advice I can give when decorating your home.
You have to try things in place, step back and see how they feel.
I often like to buy more than enough accessories when styling a client's
home, like I am doing more often now for my gig with HomeGoods.
From My Front Porch To Yours-How I Found My Style Sundays- Maison Decor
Buy more than you need so you can switch out a pair of lamps and pick
which pair "feels" best to your eye and your current decorating persona.
Is your traditional style ready for a bit of an update? Study magazines and
check out Pinterest to see what elements in home decor excite you.  Then
go track some of those same style of accessories and try them on for size.
Even switching out a traditional lamp shade for a drum shade in burlap
can make a huge difference in updating a room.
From My Front Porch To Yours-How I Found My Style Sundays- Maison Decor
What are my favorite things I have used in my own home decorating?
I have to say this antique blue opaline chandelier and sconces are at the top.
Adding wonderful antique lighting to a home is something I have been doing
for years.  Carting around light fixtures when I have moved from house to house,
its my decorating addiction~old chandeliers!
I love the painted table I have in my living room too.
From My Front Porch To Yours-How I Found My Style Sundays- Maison Decor
The antique painted table has pretty curvy legs~
lets just say I am a fan of Rococo style.
(That's frenchy and curvy shaped furniture.)  Another thing
I think one is naturally drawn to is either a straighter line
or a softer curved line in home furnishings.
These days I do like things a little less curvy and I can
appreciate straight lines better, so finding a mix is often quite right.
From My Front Porch To Yours-How I Found My Style Sundays- Maison Decor
Much like these vintage french chairs in the shop we used to have,
they share a mix of straight lines with a bit of the curvy.
I think they are a good example of how I might define my current
style preference.  Tailored Shabby Chic style..perhaps it could
be called Subdued Classic French style?  Ha! Just having a bit of fun
with naming my current style. I guess I will simply  have to call it
Maison Decor Style.
A mix of these elements:
Rustic, European, Cottage and a touch of Vintage Luxe!
Yes, thats it!
From My Front Porch To Yours-How I Found My Style Sundays- Maison Decor
I love all of those things mixed together!
Now go hone your style~play with what feels right and what
you are attracted to.  Just because you inherited mom's dining room set
doesn't mean you can't make it your own.  Painting the chairs, or hanging
a fabulous light fixture over it can change the mood and make it
your own.  Wallpaper one wall with a snappy chevron paper or an elegant
silver leafed chinoiserie paper....its all up to you, and what feels right.
Thats the essence of decorating for me.
Have fun with it, and create a home you love!

My Latest Yard Sale Find

Long time no blog post!
I only posted one time last month and I don't think that has ever happened before!
Things have been busy and good.
.......
I have found a new (wonderful) way to buy and sell things.
It is a facebook yard sale site that is just for my town.
Unlike Craiglist that covers a huge geographical area.

I have mostly been selling things on the site.
But, when I saw these shelves for only $20.00, I knew I had to havethem!
I thought it was going to be much smaller, but I was pleasantly surprised when I saw how tall and sturdy
 it was.

(The beautiful sign is from The House Of Belonging.)
..........
I am using it to hold and organize school supplies, but just for fun I staged it for you guys.
I pulled all kinds of white dishes out of my cupboards.
The dishes are from thrift stores, Walmart, 99 cents store etc.
I'm really fancy when it comes to dishes. ;)

I just love it when something is both practical and beautiful!
My mom is the same way.
I know she would love this too.
Although she'd prefer it in white. (Hi, Mom!)

Have you found any great deals lately?
Anything both useful and beautiful?

How I Found My Style Sundays- At Home With The Barkers

From My Front Porch To Yours- How I Found My Style Sundays- At Home With The Barkers
Hey everyone, I'm Sonya from At Home with The Barkers! I am thrilled that Pamela invited me over to her front porch for a home style chat. It is really an honor to be here for "How I Found My Style Sundays!"
What is my decorating style and how did I find it? I've never really thought about how I found my style or even what my style is called. I have always bought thrifted, and made things that I love. In all honesty, I believe this is the key to decorating your home and in turn your style will shine through. I've never been one to follow trends just because it's popular and I may even totally avoid a trend if it doesn't feel like me. I will admit, I have a great love of comfort so for the most part so I decorate my home with that in mind. If I had to give my style a name, I would call it Traditional Southern Comfort.
From My Front Porch To Yours- How I Found My Style Sundays-At Home With The Barkers
I love brown leather, black and white, monograms, rocking chairs and mixing warm and cool colors.
From My Front Porch To Yours- How I Found My Style Sundays-At Home With The Barkers
I also love painting furniturelamps, art, and pretty much anything that needs a new look. Also, moving furniture to get a new feel in a room is often a process at our house.
From My Front Porch To Yours- How I Found My Style Sundays-At Home With The Barkers
DIY details can also make a big difference in a room. Our recent wood plank mantel makeover is a great example.
From My Front Porch To Yours- How I Found My Style Sundays-At Home With The Barkers
I may change it up from season to season but I love to have a monogram on my front door wreath.
From My Front Porch To Yours- How I Found My Style Sundays-At Home With The Barkers
What has been my most treasured find for my house? I actually didn't find this item, it found me. It was my husbands grandmothers rocking chair. She was a wonderful woman who loved her family very much. She passed away a few years ago and my mother in law gave me her rocking chair.
From My Front Porch To Yours- How I Found My Style Sundays-At Home With The Barkers
One of the very first furniture items I refinished was a rocking chair my husband and I bought from Craig's List when I was pregnant with my son. After my kids were much older I sold that rocking chair at a yard sale, and I almost immediately regretted it! That is why my husband's grandmother's rocking chair is so special to me. I sit in it daily to watch TV.

What tips do I have for creating a beautiful home? Always, always, always....use what you love! Your gut instinct will tell you right away if you love something. If you have to talk yourself into an item, let it go. If you have to ask 10 friends what do they think, let it go. Only buy and keep what you love!

From My Front Porch To Yours- How I Found My Style Sundays-At Home With The Barkers
With that being said, everything you love may not always work well together. My advice for mixing all of the items you love is to stick to a color palette. This will help coordinate items that otherwise may not match one another.  Secondly, if you must buy something that doesn't match the color palette in your decor try it in a different room or maybe try painting it.

I wanted to say a BIG thank you to Pamela for having me share with her readers! As we say in the South, our door is always open! Please stop by and spend some time At Home with The Barkers! Have a great Sunday!

How I Found My Style Sundays- Sugar Pie Farmhouse

From My Front Porch To Yours-How I Found My Style Sundays
Ya ever stop by a blog that just warms your heart, makes ya happy and inspires you with each and every visit? Today I am honored to be featuring Aunt Ruthie from Sugarpie Farmhouse. On June 3, 2008 I hit publish on my first blog post ever...before FMFPTY...and it is because I was so inspired by Aunt Ruthie. Her blog for me is one of those warms your heart, makes happy, and inspires ya kinda of blogs. I hope that y'all enjoy getting to know more about Aunt Ruthie's style as much as I have.
From My Front Porch To Yours-How I Found My Style Sundays Sugar Pie Farmhouse
Howdy y'all! I'm Ruthie (aka Aunt Ruthie) from Sugar Pie Farmhouse. I'm tickled pink that dear, sweet, adorable Pamela asked me to share "How I Found My Style" with you today. I think this series is sooooo inspiring and I'm honored to be a part of it!

I have to say that decorating my home has always been a passion of mine. I love it because it's fun and it's the perfect creative outlet for me. But most of all I love decorating because I want to provide a cozy place, an "Ahh,-it's-good-to-be-home" kind of place for my hubby and kids. Being a mama of 4 and now a Grammy to 4, my goal has always been to create an atmosphere of love and warmth. I want my house to feel homey and joyful...a place my family wants to be.
From My Front Porch To Yours-How I Found My Style Sundays Sugar Pie Farmhouse
What is your decorating style? My decorating style is All-American-Southern-Farmy. Yup, Farmy! I know that may sound silly, but it really is my style! Think of it this way; Farm + Homey + Happy = "Farmy"!   For me, It's all about celebrating and preserving the best from the past from down-on-the-farm, when life was simpler and sweet as fresh churned butter. "Farmy" is down-home...it's homemade pie cooling on the windowsill...sun faded aprons hangin' on a hook...squeaky screen doors...rocking chairs on the front porch...family meals 'round the kitchen table...things that are white washed and scrubbed clean...well worn tables, that if they could talk, would have endearing stories to tell. Farmy also has a few chickens and cows thrown in too! I love anything that looks like it came fresh off an old farm! "Farmy" is comforting and nurturing. It says "Welcome! Come on in darlin'...sit yourself down, everything's gonna be alright...have some pie!" I live in Southern Missouri, way out in the country, and although I don't live on a working farm, I still love to incorporate farmy goodness into my home and life. For now I'm a farmgirl at heart and so my home reflects that. (The photo above is my baking center / pantry with a pass through window.)

Vintage milk-glass, milk bottles, white enamelware, old silverware...and pie are on the top of my list!

Inside the pantry, through the squeaky farmhouse screen door is my itty bitty "General Store".

How did you find your style? I would have to say that I've always loved country style. Years ago my style was more like "Country Clutter" but as time has gone by I've decided I want a much simpler look. I'm still working on that. :D

Here is our kitchen/Great-room. It truly is the heart of our home.

Like I said..All-American-Southern-Farmy has a few cows and chickens thrown in! (and 1 pig, top right corner :D) Yee Haw!

What has been your most treasured find for your home? So far, my favorite find is the Cedar Hill Farm sign that sits above my great-room fireplace mantle. When I saw it I thought to myself, this is coming home with Mama! I found it at a local flea market here in the Ozarks for $25. I love that it was homemade. The letters are clearly hand cut and nailed to weathered-white barn boards. It came with a sleepy fuzzy caterpillar curled up in the "a". I found a better home for him. :D
From My Front Porch To Yours-How I Found My Style Sundays Sugar Pie Farmhouse
Since the sign is quite heavy it pretty much stays right there, so I just decorate around it for each season.

What tips do you have for creating a beautiful home? I really think it starts with our mindset. It's a privilege to be a homemaker! To make warm and cheerful the place that we call home. To bless our loved ones with a cozy atmosphere. A beautiful home starts with love. Fill it with the kinds of things you love...to hug the hearts of those you love. I think when we take the time to beautify our home by keeping it clean and adding our special homey touches it sends a message of love to our family. A message that will warm their hearts all their life. How wonderful is that?! Another tip is to celebrate life in each season through our decorating! I'm so thankful God gave us four seasons in which to add fresh joy and beauty into our homes. On my blog, Sugar Pie Farmhouse, I love opening up my home to share my Fall Home Tour and my Christmas Home Tour. Decorating for Spring, Summer, Fall and Christmas just makes a home look and feel happy. All 4 kids of mine have told me how wonderful and magical it was coming home from school to find that I'd started decorating the house for the holidays. I love that they loved that!!
From My Front Porch To Yours-How I Found My Style Sundays Sugar Pie Farmhouse

From My Front Porch To Yours-How I Found My Style Sundays Sugar Pie Farmhouse
Another tip that's so simple but adds such coziness is lamplight! It's not as harsh on the eyes as overhead lighting can sometimes be. I also like pink lightbulbs, especially in the bedroom. Even though they are "pink" they don't really look pink when turned on, they just create a warm homey, glow. Creating a beautiful home is more than pretty furnishings it's creating a happy home atmosphere. Light candles, so your home smells yummy. Play music that's fun and uplifting or soothing and peaceful. Keep things tidy as best as you can. Keep a song in your heart and a sweet smile on your face! A happy mama makes a beautiful home!
From My Front Porch To Yours-How I Found My Style Sundays Sugar Pie Farmhouse
I also love creating little vignettes...little scenes that tell a story. Chickens and eggs...waiting for Springtime.
