Here is my third and final entry for Living with Lindsay's Spring Dollar Store Challenge. It really stretched my creativity to come up with something cute when I only had $5.00 to spend. But I loved it!
The mama bird gets the big nest and baby bird (to be) gets the little nest.
Here's what I got at the dollar store: A tan ceramic bird, a pack of "rattan" balls, a package of malted candy eggs, a bag of moss (not shown in this photo) and a white metal planter box.
I spray painted the bird using Heirloom White. I then used blue craft paint to highlight the raised detail on the wing and painted some of the tail feathers. I painted the birds eye and beak brown. Finally I covered the whole thing with smoke glaze and then applied some spray poly.
The metal planter box started out white but had orange and green on it as well (ick!). So I sprayed it with the Heirloom White and then added glaze on it as well.
For the nest I cut the top off the rattan ball and then stretched it into the shape of a nest. I then filled it with moss and added the candy egg.
I filled the box with crumpled paper towels so my moss had something to sit on. I very lightly spritzed all of the moss with some flat white spray paint to tone down the bright green color.I then placed the moss inside the box forming it into a nest shape and nestled the bird into her nest.
This project started out as something totally different and that project was a disaster. So I had to start from scratch coming up with a new idea for these supplies and what do ya know; this ended up being my favorite project. Don't you love it when that happens!
By the way I hope you all have noticed something very important. I only used ONE piece of candy in the project. That means you get to EAT the rest!!!! yeah!
